Everything you need to know about Sensation Dubai 2016

Sensation makes its first trip into the desert this weekend. The all-white, blinding light spectacular is coming to a specially constructed Desert Dome – filled with aerials acrobats, dancers and pyrotechnics, we’re told – that is being constructed at the Bab Al Sham Event Arena out in Al Qudra on Friday, November 11.

The 2016 instalment of the party is being headlined by Afrojack, the 29-year-old Grammy-award-winning DJ and producer from the Netherlands. It’s fair to say that Nick Van De Wall, the name he was born with, loves an anthem. His 2010 floor-filler “Take Over Control” quickly became a clubland classic around the world, while his collaboration with Dimitri Vegas, Like Mike and Nervo, “The Way We See The World”, was the official song of Tomorrowland 2012.

He is, though, at pains to say he’s “not EDM”, recognising the less-than-positive connotations. “If I was EDM, I would be chilling, demanding 20 hotel rooms, playing for one-and-a-half hours and being miserable,” he says. “But I don’t want to be that, I want to make something that people can be proud of… My main focus is to make a sound that is not describable.”

We’ll find out just how close he gets on Friday, right?

Also on the bill is Aly & Fila, Ummet Ozcan, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Yax.x and Sem Thomasson, and of course Sensation Dubai resident, Mr White.

Aly & Fila
Trance music duo Aly & Fila are big names in their home country, Egypt, as well as around the globe. Their career-launching Egyptrance brought them a loyal local following, long before they released the likes of “We Control The Sunlight”, which was chosen as the tune of the year by Armin Van Buuren in 2011, and “Running Out of Time”. They’ve played at the world’s most prestigious clubs and festivals, all while running their own record label and a radio show.

Ummet Ozcan
Turkish-Dutch producer and DJ Ummet Ozcan often shares credits with other electronic music heavyweights. He’s signed to the prestigious Spinnin’ Records, and has released tracks with the likes of R3hab and Nervo. He’s also collaborated with Calvin Harris, Tiesto and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike – their song “The Hum” hit number one in Belgium in 2015.
Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano
You’re probably familiar which their track “SOTU”, which was releaed in collaboration with Nicky Romero on Steve Angello’s label. Now signed to Spinnin’ Records, their more recent singles include “ABC” with Sander Van Doorn and “Come Follow” featuring KiFi. They’re festival regulars, playing the main stage at the likes of Tomorrowland.
Sem Thomasson
Young Belgian up-and-comer Sem Thomasson is also on the bill. Already an established name in the music world, he’s worked as a songwriter and remixer – he’s remixed tracks for the likes of Flo Rida, Nelly Furtado and Steve Aoki. Now signed to Warner Music Group he’s focusing on releasing music under his own name. Beatport have name-checked him as future talent to watch.
Yax.x
Also on the bill is Yax.x, who is no stranger to the Sensation brand. He’s already taken his first steps on the European DJ circuit, playing in the likes of Barcelona and Ibiza.
Sensation resident Mr White will be behind the decks to warm up the crowd. He’s been travelling the world with Sensation for years, almost becoming as notorious as the DJs he opens for.

The event runs from 6pm – 3am. For general admission tickets visit
