Dubai firm to build world’s first 3D printed skyscraper

Dubai is positioning itself at the forefront of 3D printing, so it comes as no surprise that a Dubai-based firm will build the world’s first ever skyscraper.

According to Construction Week, construction technologies firm, Cazza, is able to use 3D printing to create skyscrapers with a new technique called ‘crane printing’.

CEO of Cazza, Chris Kelsey, said: “When we first thought of implementing 3D printing technologies, we were mostly thinking of houses and low-rise buildings.

“Developers kept asking us if it was possible to build a 3D printed skyscraper. This led us to begin researching how we could adapt the technologies for taller structures. Through our technologies, we will be able to build architecturally complex buildings at never-before seen speeds. It is all about economies of scale where the initial high technology costs will reduce as we enter the mass-production phase.”

The firm will use cranes with special units that will enable them to create buildings over 80 metres high. These cranes will print specific parts of the building, with the rest being built using more traditional building techniques.

Xavier Hernand, mechanical engineer at Cazza, said: “The material side leaves vast possibilities with concrete and steel being just one of many materials that can be used with 3D printing.”

In April last year, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, launched a new strategy which aims to make 25 percent of buildings in Dubai built using 3D printing by 2030.

“Our vision for development is driven by a deep understanding of the future needs, and built on proactive ideas because we want to be in first place globally. Our methodology for development is based on the launch of initiatives that can be applied anywhere in the world and creating a global model for not only our economy but also for the global economy,” he said.
