Apple Pay launches in the UAE
If you’ve ever been out and realised that you’ve left your wallet at home, we have some good news for you: that wallet can stay at home my friends. You don’t need it anymore.
Apple Pay has now launched in the UAE, making those impulse purchases even easier. It works in select stores with your iPhone SE, iPhone 6 or later, and Apple Watch. And, of course, you can now do your online shopping with touch ID from your phone.
You need to have a supported card from a participating bank, and the good news is that this includes most of the big UAE banks, including Emirates NBD, Mashreq, HSBC, RAKBANK, Standard Chartered and Emirates Islamic.
So far there are tens of thousands of merchants signed up to accept Apple Pay in stores, including Apple Store, Virgin Megastore, Caffe Nero, Marks & Spenser, Sharaf DG, Homecenter. All you have to do is scan your iPhone, Apple Watch or iPad at a contactless terminal – so basically, insteading of scanning a contactless debit card, you scan your device. Once the device has been scanned, and you have used your Touch ID to confirm the transaction, the required amount will be reduced from the bank card that you used to set up your Apple Wallet.
Many more are equipped to take your money electronically through Apple Pay, including Ounass, Namshi, and Babyshop and, importantly, Freedom Pizza.
Speaking on the news, the Vice President of Apple Pay Jennifer Bailey said: “We know our customers in the UAE will love the added convenience and security Apple Pay brings, and we can’t wait for them to start making easier and more private payments soon.”
