Dubai Metro users listen up! The metro route from the Jumeirah Lakes Towers metro station to the Ibn Battuta metro station and vice versa will be suspended for a little over a year from January 5.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the news via Twitter earlier today.

The closure comes as an attempt to further the development of Route 2020 – the official metro route for the Expo 2020 site.

For all those effected, the RTA has revealed that it will be supplying a shuttle bus service to go to and from both metro stations.

The two routes are expected to go back into operation from mid-2019.

If you’re new to Dubai or are unaware of Route 2020, here’s what you need to know…

  • The AED10.6 billion route will provide direct access to areas like the Discovery Gardens, Jumeriah Golf Estates and Dubai Investment Parks.
  • The route will also result in 50 new trains added to the Dubai Metro fleet. 15 of which will be used exclusively for the Expo while the remaining 35 will go to improving the overall traffic on the Dubai Metro.
  • Aside from ease traffic flow and connect new areas of the city, Route 2020 will feature seven stations. Five of which will be elevated while two will be underground.
  • Overall, Route 2020 will extend the Dubai Metro’s Re Line by 15km from the Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station.

Previously speaking on the already iconic route, His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA said: “The construction of Route 2020 Project is part of Dubai Plan 2021 for achieving sustainable development and offering world-class services.

“It is also an implementation of RTA Strategic Plan 2021 for providing mass transit systems comprising the metro, tram, buses and marine transit modes. The ultimate aim of these plans is to realise RTA’s vision of Safe & Smooth Transport for all.”

Route 2020 is just one of the many projects being developed in anticipation of Expo 2020. Some of the other projects include the already iconic Al Wasl Plaza and what is soon to be one of Dubai’s smartest neighbourhoods, District 2020.
