“We came searching for the future and we found it in Dubai,” said Jeffrey Cernov, Executive Producer of Star Trek Beyond at the film’s press conference in Dubai today. He was joined by Director, Justin Lin, and leading actors Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, and Idris Elba. The whole team is here to film the final location of Star Trek Beyond.

Idris Elba, the new addition to the cast, is taking on the role of the villain. He seemed extremely excited to be part of the film, and spoke of his enthusiasm to finish shooting in the UAE. “Here in Dubai we have a very exciting time in front of us, I’m super psyched,” he said. “It’s been a good ride and I’m glad we finish here in Dubai.”

Hundreds of Dubai residents will also be pleased that that the Trekkies are here. The casting call for extras drew huge crowds to studio city, and over the next few weeks, many will have small roles in the film. Jeffrey Cernov commented: “We will have the largest gathering of background performers. Around 600 people working on it in costume for the next two weeks!”

But it seems that the stars are just as excited about the Dubai filming location as the hordes of extras. “This is such a stunning city, it’s the future land,” said Chris Pine.

As well as filling the boots of Scotty, Simon Pegg is also a co-writer, and he clearly embraced the challenge of continuing the Star Trek franchise for Star Trek Beyond. “We really wanted to embody Star Trek as much as possible, it felt like it had to embrace what is fundamental for Star Trek but it had to be a new kind of Star Trek,” he said, adding, “It’s been a very emotional ride from inception to execution.”

If you’re not donning a Trekkie costume and venturing into the desert for filming, you can get your first look of the film when it’s released in July 2016.
