Fashion Forward Dubai
Dubai returns for its spring session, the first of 2017. In its new-ish home of the Dubai Design District, it has consolidated its position as the most important platform for the burgeoning fashion sector in the UAE and again offers a showcase for the brightest design talents – as well as providing a comprehensive platform of education modules, seminars and panel discussions to inspire the next generation. Among the key runway shows are new collections from 6 Degree, Abed Mahfouz, Amato, Anaya, Emperor, Hussein Bazaza, Kristina Fidelskaya, Michael Cinco and Starch, while there will also be carefully curated jewellery and accessory collections at The Showcase. Oh, and there’ll be some afterparties. Because, you know, networking and all that.

Shadmehr Aghili
The Iranian artist is all set to take Cavalli’s guests on a musical journey – no seriously, he plays a string of musical instruments such as the piano, violin, trumpet and banjo. Joining the “Taghdir” singer on stage is the club’s in-house DJ Soheil Ray. In short, expect a night filled with great beats and some seriously chicly dressed people – the door policy is no effort, no entrance… we’d make an effort.

Bounce After Dark Party
Comic book fans rejoice! Bounce have partnered with Comic Con to throw what is set to be one of the biggest and best after dark parties of the year. Keen jumpers can come dressed as their favourite action heroes or villains and battle each other on the trampolines – we guess by battle, they mean see who jumps the highest… Aside from games, there’ll be a string of DJs including DJ Flippside and Jason Jase providing the night’s tunes. As comic book fans, we’re tempted to see just how this plays out… If you want to join in on the fun, be sure to book online in advance, we have a feeling that it’s gonna be pretty packed.
Price: AED80 per person
When: 8pm-12am, Thursday, March 23
Where: Bounce Dubai, Building 32, 4B Street, Al Quoz 1

Spice & Ice Ladies Night
The place that loves a bit of dry ice… The bar area here is pretty cool and you can expect commercial hip-hop coming from the speakers, friendly staff and great service. The dress code says “dress to impress”, but smart casual or work wear will do just fine. It gets very busy and it is pretty loud. More of a let-your-hair-down place than one for a good catch-up.
When: 6pm-1am, Tuesdays
Where: Movenpick Hotel, Cluster A, JLT

Beauty and the Beast (PG13)
Disney gets all self-referential in this live-action remake of the 1991 animated classic, which was, of course, an adaptation of the 18th century fairy tale written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. What that means is that all of the music, the technicolour spectacle and, most importantly, the additional characters are retained in this big-budget production – including the talking candle Lumière (Ewan McGregor), Le Fou (an over-the-top Josh Gad), a talking teapot (Emma Thompson) and the dastardly local dandy Gaston (Luke Evans), whose attentions are forever trained on Belle (a suitably demur and unyielding Emma Watson). For more modern tastes, there is also a dash of gothic darkness to the cinematography, and at times it dips its toe into Snow White and the Huntsman territory with all its creepy forests and crepuscular light. Overall, though, there is sufficient charm, smarts and vulnerability from its leading lady, who hasn’t always convinced in adult roles post Harry Potter, and enough trademark cross-generational humour to keep everyone engaged. Rather like last year’s semi-live-action Jungle Book, it respects its forebear but manages to exist in its own universe.
