Assassin’s Creed (18)
Games to movies haven’t always worked – Prince of Persia? – but maybe Assassin’s Creed will start a new, healthier trend. More of a companion piece than a straight-up adaptation, this film sees our cover star travelling in time to stab CGI-generated bad guys by the grace of some sci-fi sorcery. Add Marion Cotillard, a shadowy corporation looking to exploit Fassbender’s “genetic memories” and an Inquisition-era Spanish backdrop and you’re staring at a pretty decent Friday night.
In cinemas from December 29

I Am Not A Serial Killer (18)
You mean, the title isn’t enough for you? Okay, how about the fact Christopher “Doc” Lloyd is in it? More? Okay, the story follows an increasingly brutal chain of murders in a small Mid-Western town that fascinates a death-obsessed, BMX-riding teen who just happens to be the son of a pathologist. Oh, and there’s a driving, emo-goth soundtrack. Based on the cult novel by Dan Wells, this is angsty gold.
In select Vox cinemas from December 29

The Space Between Us (15)
This engaging sci-fi-slash-coming-of-age adventure stars Asa Butterfield – Ender’s Game, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – as the first human born on Mars, who then travels to Earth to learn more about his parents’ home. Once there, he discovers the wonders of this wet, breezy planet – mainly in the form of a very pretty girl called Tulsa (Britt Robertson) – although the strain it places on his body means the clock starts ticking immediately. With teary results.
In cinemas from December 29

The Monster (18)
There isn’t too much new ground broken in Bryan Bertino’s latest horror, The Monster, which is essentially another retread of the thing-in-the-forest trope. What it does have, though, is a secondary narrative of a pre-teen girl’s fractious relationship, told in flashbacks, with her frankly awful mother, a role that Zoe Kazan absolutely crushes with scene-stealing vigour. Never mind the eagle-jawed, man-eating beast, she’s the real monster here.
In cinemas from December 29

Office Christmas Party
Leave the brain at the door and enjoy uncomplicated, telegraphed gags from Bateman, Aniston and co.

Passengers
The pod Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence are using to travel to another planet pops open 90 years too soon. Like, awkward.
