Swallows and Amazons (18)
Horribly out of fashion now, but the novels of Arthur Ransome were a staple of bedtime reading in British middle-class homes in the 1950s and 60s. A sort of earthier Famous Five, they told of pre-adolescent adventures in an England that has long since receded to sepia-tinted memory. A film version of his most famous tale is, then, as surprising as it is evocative as holidaying gangs battle over an island in the Lake District. A subplot of pre-WW2 espionage helps to add some meat to this spiffing yarn.

Raees (18)
A controversial film, this. The latest vehicle for Shah Rukh Khan has been beset by issues, not least the fact that it is believed – even if repeatedly denied – to be based on the life of the head of the Gujarat underworld, Abdul Latif, which didn’t please his son. Add in a famous Pakistani actress, currently banned in India of course, and you have endless fodder for the tabloids. On the other hand, think of the ticket sales for this bold, brassy actioneer.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (18)
Finally, the last battle is here. After six films over 14 years, the woman-versus-a-billion-zombies yarn comes to CGI-fuelled conclusion. The twist-laden plot sees Alice (Milla Jovovich) return to Racoon City to try to defeat Umbrella Corp once and for all. After the lackluster Afterlife and Retribution, it seems writer-director Paul WS Anderson – Milla’s husband – wanted to crank it all up to 11. Well, he got to 9.

Weaponized (18)
Like many sci-fi movies, the premise of Weaponized combines the ludicrous with the now-just-wait-a-minute plausible. A private military contractor (Tom Sizemore) and a professor (Mickey Rourke) have created conscious-swapping weapons that enable soldiers to inhabit – and then control – the minds of their targets. When this (inevitably) threatens to get into the wrong hands, it’s up to a detective (Johnny Messner) to intervene. Sadly, you can’t help feeling it’s a waste of a cast – and a good idea.
