Triple 9 (18)
It is, frankly, about time we had another full-on heist movie delivered by an all-star ensemble cast. Triple 9 is no Ocean’s 11, though. The Atlanta-set crime drama, directed by John Hillcoat, is perhaps more reminiscent of The Town, a hard-bitten and often violent tale of a gang and two corrupt cops who are trying to steal information on a Russian mafia boss, who will reward them handsomely for their efforts. If only it were that simple. Casey Affleck, back on form after too many mumble-core roles, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Woody Harrelson star in this above-par thriller.

Allegiant (15)
The latest instalment of the Divergent series sees Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) escape from their encircled city to find out what lies beyond the security walls. There, they run into a mysterious organisation called the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, which they must decide whether to trust or not. It’s breathless stuff, with plenty of post-adolescent angst, but the story is engaging enough – even if you occasionally confuse plotlines with those other Maze Running Hunger Givers.

The Other Side of the Door (18)
This British-Indian co-production, directed by Johannes Roberts and starring Prison Break’s Sarah Wayne Callies, requires viewers to suspend a good many critical faculties but, in the horror-suspense genre, that’s probably to be expected. It centres on a family who lose their young son to an accident, only for an ancient rite to give them one chance of a reunion – except it opens the door to a whole host of other horrors.

Race (15)
Emotionally charged biopic of Jesse Owens, the African-American sprinter who dominated the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin and, in doing so, obliterated Adolf Hitler’s claims of Aryan supremacy. Starring Canadian actor Stephan James in the leading role and, aided by some sumptuous set-design and art direction, it beautifully captures the 1930s, with all it’s social and racial tensions – at home and abroad.

Zoolander 2
Derek is still doing his famous Blue Steel look, but then so is a catwalk murderer, who he is recruited to catch.
