6 things to do in Dubai this week

Published

on

This week brings a fantastic mix of events and activities, and lots of them involve our favourite hobby… eating. Get stuck into the monthly dinner party at Ruth’s Chris, try the brand new ladies night at The Maine with unlimited free drinks, and browse some of the cool brands at Market Outside the Box (don’t worry, there are food trucks). Enjoy!

The Maine Ladies Night
Wonderfully titled, The Clam Jam, ladies night at The Maine got our attention straight away. Not only because of its seaside feel and fantastic menu, but because there “are no rules”. No vouchers, no limitations… Just four hours of free drinks for the ladies.

Where: The Maine Oyster Bar & Grill, JBR, +971 4 4576719

Ruth’s Chris dinner party
Join Ruth’s Chris and Baron Philippe De Rothschild for their monthly dinner party. The chef and sommelier have collaborated to bring a delicious four-course menu paired with an iconic grape. Early table reservations are highly recommended.

Simple Minds
Scottish legends Simple Minds come to Dubai this week, bringing their brand of art-tinged stadium rock. Although most readily associated with their 1980s, floppy-haired, arm-waving, sing-along power pop, Simple Minds were actually one of the most innovative and interesting bands to emerge from Britain in the post-punk era. While “Don’t You Forget About Me”, the song from teen emo-a-thon The Breakfast Club is their most famous single, their extensive back catalogue has enjoyed an enduring appeal – including members of Manic Street preachers and Moby.
When: Thursday, January 28, 9pm
Where: The Irish Village,

Market Outside The Box
It’s your chance to snap up brands that are popular with the region’s Instagram fashionistas. This retail and lifestyle event brings together much-loved emerging brands such as All Things Mochi, Deborah Henning, Glam on You and Dee by Dalia, for a 10 days of shopping, music, dance, shows and cinema. As well as plenty of exciting stalls and activities, there will be food trucks and stands run by independent eateries.
When: Until January 30. 4pm to 10pm on weekdays and 10am to 10pm on weekends
Where: Burj Park,

Cinema – Concussion (15)
Following an autopsy on former footballer Mike Webster, forensic pathologist Omalu detects a neurological deterioration that’s akin to Alzheimer’s disease. He makes his findings public, much to the chagrin of the corporate bods in the upper echelons of the NFL. Continuing to find connections between football and the fatal condition (then labelled chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a crusading Omalu joins forces with a former NFL doctor Julian Bailes (Alec Baldwin), a supporter of Omalu’s ethical cause. Together, they begin to raise awareness about the inherent, life-altering dangers the game’s players face.
In cinemas January 21

Dubai from Dawn to Dusk – A Real Mirage
Daniel Cheong and Beno Saradzic are responsible for some of the UAE’s most iconic photographs. Timelines are filled with their mesmerising photographs of the Burj Khalifa reaching through the clouds, the city sprawling beyond Garhoud Bridge and even the traffic at Dubai Airport.
‘Dubai from Dawn to Dusk – A Real Mirage’ is a collection of 20 pictures taken by the photographers, showing the architectural marvels of the city. Sofitel The Palm’s dedicated art space, Monda Gallery, will open to the public for the free exhibition.
When: Until February 28
Where: Monda Gallery, Sofitel The Palm
