8 places to celebrate Chinese New Year in Abu Dhabi

We’re all set to welcome in the Year of the Monkey for the most auspicious event in the Chinese Lunar calendar this February, so whether it’s authentic Chinese food direct from the streets of Hong Kong or recipes passed down through generations, traditional celebrations, arts and crafts workshops and demonstrations or even just details of the fireworks you’re after, it’s all happening in the city and it’s all right here (with no monkeying around)!

Shangri-La Qaryat Al Beri
Well known for their Chinese New year festivities, the celebrations get underway on February 7 with a traditional ‘eye-drawing’ and cai ging ceremony, followed by the ever crowd-pleasing lion troupe dance throughout the hotel lobby and restaurants. If it’s authentic Chinese food to accompany the spectacle you’re dreaming of, you’ll want to try the seven course Cantonese menu in Shang Palace, created by their new Chinese Executive Chef, Bo Lu especially for the festivities and even featuring a traditional kung fu tea show as you dine.
When: Opening ceremonies on February 7, Shang Palace seven course menu will be available from 6pm daily between February 8 and February 22.

Yas Mall
Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy an array of performances for Chinese New Year. Highlights are set to include the UAE’s first Lion Pole Dance, Kung Fu Workshops, acrobatic shows, calligraphy and Chinese lantern making. Entertainment is on going through the Chinese New Year period with roaming entertainment every hour.

Hakkasan
Along with a limited edition menu, Hakkasan invites diners to share their hopes and wishes for the season on a gold ribbon to be hung throughout the restaurant in the Chinese Wishing Tree tradition inspired by the Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees in Hong Kong. The menu is made up of dishes specially selected to bring luck, joy and prosperity with diced Wagyu beef and pine nut golden cup and wok fried lobster in a spicy truffle sauce amongst the delectable offerings.

The Galleria
If it’s authentic entertainment you want for Chinese New Year then you won’t be let down by visiting The Galleria. With a host of events taking place including the ever-popular Lion Dance, traditional Chinese fan dances, demonstrations of traditional Chinese arts and crafts and more, it’s safe to say it’s all happening. Leading the celebrations are the famous Chinese acrobatic troupe ‘Cirque Shanghai’, for a fast paced visual spectacle and edge of your seat action, this is one you won’t want to miss. There’s even a fireworks display to mark the occasion on February 5 at 9.45pm.

Dai Pai Dong
Celebrate in style with traditional Hong Kong recipes in a Chinese New Year dinner at Dai Pai Dong. Get stuck into a set menu that includes all the classic favourites from Crispy Duck, short ribs, deep fried seabass with sweet and sour sauce and plenty more. And if you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, there’s also the Chinese New Year Dim Sum brunch showcasing authentic recipes passed down through generations by Chef He Jia’s family. You won’t get much closer to Hong Kong than that without getting on a plane.

Teatro
Known for blending the best from East and West, Teatro has launched a limited edition menu to celebrate Chinese New Year. Feast on a specially designed A La Carte menu of Far Eastern favourites from Five Spice Crispy Squid, Sweet and Sour Prawns, Hakka Braised Duck and in true Teatro style, there’s always plenty more where that came from.
When: 7pm, February 3 to 12th.

Café Palmier
Get your glad rags on and enjoy an extravagant feast specially selected for the most significant event in the Chinese Lunar calendar, where all the family are welcome. Chinese dishes have been meticulously selected and reinvented for today’s international palate and live cooking stations will maintain a steady flow of everyone’s favourites dumplings, Dim Sum, sushi, and nigiri, all alongside a mouth-watering collection of both hot and cold buffet dishes.

Li Jiang
Offering a special Pan Asian set menu and live cooking stations, Li Jiang aims to transport their guests back in time to enjoy, honour and celebrate traditions of Chinese New Year that are centuries old.
