7 of the best places to get gyozas in Dubai

Not quite sure why these little pan-fried Japanese parcels hit the spot so much, but they have become a genuine contender for appetizer of choice in the Shortlist office. They’re a staple of many an Asian menu and, for us at least, the thing we reach for first. Thankfully, there are plenty of variations on offer in Dubai.

Nobu
Where: Atlantis The Palm
How much: AED165 (five pieces)
May as well start with one of the best restaurants around – even if the price might seem a little otherworldly for five dumplings. The creations here aren’t your regular minced shrimp efforts, though; the chef has created a salmon and foie gras gyoza that bursts with a deep, tangy and slightly sweet flavour that seems inconceivable in such a small bite along with a wagyu gyoza for the meat lovers. Ridiculously good.

Itsu
Where: Marina Walk, Dubai Marina
How much? AED22-40
After undergoing a rebrand a couple of years ago, it’s great to see the quality of Itsu has remained the same. You may get lost in the wide variety of sushi, maki and temaki but just go a little further down the menu to find the generously stuffed gyozas. If you are feeling a little adventurous then give the gyoza ramen a try, a satisfying combination of feel-good warm soup and meaty gyoza.

Atisuto
Where: Al Ghurair Mall, Galleria Mall, Ibn Batutta Mall, Bay Square in Business Bay
How much? AED66 (ten pieces)
Based on the concept of back-alley sushi restaurants found in the major cities of Japan, this place can whip up some lip-smacking gyozas. The good news is they are celebrating the month of July as the ‘month of gyozas’. Diners can choose from chicken, wagyu beef, seafood and tofu with vegetables. Two plates with five gyozas each cost AED66.

Yo! Sushi
Where: Marina Mall, Dubai Mall, Mirdif City Centre, Ibn Battuta Mall, Burjuman Center
How much? AED18 (three pieces)
Perhaps the most well-known Japanese style restaurant on the list, Yo! Sushi serves up chicken and beef gyozas alongside the rest of the conveyer belt classics – prepared right under your nose and extremely affordable. It’s no wonder the Yo! Sushi coupons are invariably the first ones ripped from the Entertainer book every year.

Hako Sushi
Where: Jumeirah Lakes Towers, The Walk
How much? AED27-32 (four pieces)
With its enjoyable outside tent-style dining area, Hako Sushi comes as a nice break from the usual long and sometimes slightly cramped tables seen in the majority of Japanese-style restaurants. The chicken and prawn gyozas here are perhaps the most dim sum like, but the flavor is consistently good.

Wagamama
Where: The Greens, Crowne Plaza, JBR, Palm Jumeirah
How much? AED30-34 (five pieces)
The first thing that comes to mind at the mention of Asian dining room is probably Wagamama. The menu has two versions of gyozas here: fried and steamed. There is also a variety of fillings to choose from which include prawn, chicken, duck and vegetable all served with our favorite dipping sauce. It’s also very thoughtful to have a guide to the language in the back of the menu, and the Greens branch is especially pleasant with its outdoor seating.

Tomo
Where: Raffles Dubai
How much? AED57 (six pieces)
With a pretty sweet view to match the food, Tomo is the perfect place to try some authentic Japanese food. You’ll find the liveliest ambience in the outdoor seating area (during the cooler months). Gyozas are served with a great selection of dipping sauces.
