REVIEW: Zheng He’s

Published

on

Zheng He’s, the contemporary Chinese restaurant in Jumeirah Mina A’Salam, has relaunched, boasting a fresh new menu and vibrant new interior. Inspired by the Chinese nautical explorer Zheng He, the restaurant’s menu showcases quintessentially oriental dishes, offering Chinese cuisine presented with neo-oriental flair.

Fresh seafood features heavily, with a live tank showcasing crab and lobster daily, as well as popular turbot, grouper, and snapper. Many of the seafood dishes are prepared using Chinese style pickling, as would have been done upon Zheng He’s fleet of ships.

Carefully assembled by Chef Kenmin Foo Chin Fatt, Zheng He’s new à la carte menu, available for both lunch and dinner, represents an orchestrated selection of appetisers, soups, broths and dim sums. Menu highlights include Golden King Prawns with Chinese mustard sauce and mango salsa, and Singaporean Style Mud Crab with imported tomato and chili sauce from Singapore, served atop a Lotus leaf. Deep fried Bau sliders with green tea ice cream and coconut jam, and deep fried mango cheese cake will delight for dessert.

There are also several signature dishes that add an element of theatre to the dining experience. The Whole Roasted BBQ Beijing Duck is prepared table-side by a resident duck master, skilled to artfully carve the crispy duck quickly with a Chinese cleaver.

The Fortune Beggar Chicken, salt baked and wrapped in pandan leaves, is ideal for groups of diners to share. The chicken is slow cooked for four hours until tender and is stuffed with Chinese mushrooms and spices. It is served to the table whole, where the chef breaks open the salty outer-shell with a mallet revealing the roasted chicken inside.

Tasting menu
For an authentic culinary journey across the diverse regions in China, Zheng He’s Voyage provides an extensive seven-course tasting menu to enliven the senses. Memorable highlights include Barbeque Honey Chicken Puff, Chinese Soft Shell Crab with sour plum and lime and Rabbit Wonton Soup with Chinese greens.

Wok Fried Kong Pow Chicken is tossed with cashew nuts and dried chilli, allowing a delicious mix of salty, sweet, sour, and spicy flavours, while Wu Xi Beef Short Ribs are slow cooked in oriental barbecue sauce. Steamed Bao Sliders, an exciting interpretation of the much-loved Chinese dumplings, are served with green tea ice cream and coconut jam by way of a grand finale.

Boasting vibrant and stylish interiors, Zheng He’s spacious outdoor terrace also offers al fresco dining by the resort’s waterways, with stunning views of the Burj Al Arab for a memorable dining experience.
