RoboCop may be a science fiction movie, but as Dubai increasingly embraces futuristic technology, it may not be too far from reality.

A prototype was on display at GITEX Technology Week at Dubai’s World Trade Centre, showcasing Dubai Police’s high-tech new initiatives.

The robot is able to scan faces, and the computer on its chest will allow people to report a crime and pay traffic fines. According to Arabian Business, Dubai Police are planning to utilise robots and introduce artificial intelligence into the force over the next four years.

Dubai Media Office tweeted a picture of the robot cop, saying: “GITEX 2016: Dubai Police Robot to enter service from next year.” This suggests that, although the new technology isn’t expected to be fully implemented across the city until 2020, we may see the first robots on the streets very soon.

Dubai Police’s Technical Innovations Department Head Major Adnan Ali first spoke about using robotics back in June 2016, saying that the robots will be able to “spot people from 10 meters or 20 meters away, approach them and greet them.” He added, “We’re expecting for it to be in tourist areas at first in 2017, near Burj Khalifa, GPR, City Walk and by 2020 we want to have a more thorough area covered.”

“Robots could do the work of a police officer on ground at certain situations. We are working on a similar project and it will be ready by Expo 2020,” Col. Khalid Razooqi, General Director of Smart Department Dubai Police, told Emirates 24/7. “The project we are working on will involve robots interacting with people and performing some responsibilities that of a police officer.”

This initiative is part of a wider plan to ulitise cutting edge technology in Dubai. The city is also pressing forward with 3D printing, which will boost the construction industry, and is one of a handful of cities across the globe exploring Hyperloop transport.
