Tesla self-driving taxis are coming to Dubai

You don’t have to buy the latest Tesla models to experience the revolutionary autonomous car, nope, hopefully by the end of this year, all you need to do is hail a cab.

Confused? Let’s break it down, the genius that is Elon Musk was in Dubai earlier this week to lunch his reality defying automaker company, Tesla. During this time the 45-year-old South African-born Canadian businessman signed a deal with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Said deal, will see the RTA buy 200 electric cars from the brands latest range which includes the Model S sedan and Model X SUV, which you as a passenger can use should you order their limo service. Fancy.

So why are they doing this? It’s all part of the city’s mission to become the world’s smartest city, and the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative.

“It is also part of the Dubai Smart Autonomous Mobility Strategy aimed at transforming 25 per cent of total journeys in Dubai into autonomous journeys by 2030,” said Mattar Al Tayer, the director general and chairman of the board at the RTA.

The car, or more specifically the Tesla Autopilot, not only has the ability to drive the car for you, it can also do at a safety level that’s substantially greater than that of a human driver. Interesting.
