Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has bought 200 driverless cars from Tesla. The electric vehicles are fitted with autonomous diving technology, meaning that when they are added to the city’s taxi fleet, no driver will be required.

Director General of the RTA, Mattar Al Tayer, signed the deal with the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, at the World Government Summit 2017.

“This agreement is… part of the Dubai Smart Autonomous Mobility Strategy aimed at transforming 25 percent of total journeys in Dubai into autonomous journeys by 2030,” said Al Tayer.

According to Tesla, the RTA will purchase Model S sedans and Model X SUVs from Tesla. The RTA and Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) will carry out a test run of the driverless taxis as part of the city’s fleet.

In a 55 second clip uploaded to Twitter earlier this month, Dubai Media Office showed a Tesla car driving down Sheikh Zayed Road, where passengers can select their destination and pull up a map on the window.

It’s all part of the city’s mission to become the world’s smartest city, and the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative.

The car, or more specifically the Tesla Autopilot, not only has the ability to drive the car for you, it can also do at a safety level that’s substantially greater than that of a human driver. Interesting.

Aside from safety, here’s what you as future passengers have to look forward to…

Model S
The Model S can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in just 2.7 seconds and has a travel range of up to 632 km when it’s on charge. Sweet. It’s also got a 17 inch touch screen as well as all the latest gizmos and gadgets.

Model X
The Model X has been describes as the safest, fastest and most capable sport utility vehicle on the road. Nice. It’s also incredibly fast – it can go from 0 to 100 kph in just 3.1 seconds. It’s also got seating for seven and the largest all glass panoramic windshield in production. Very nice.
