UAE resident spends AED4.5 million on a mobile number
Ladies and gentlemen, what you’re about to read may just be the most expensive mobile number of all time... +971 58 888 8888. Said number, although simple, just cost Indian businessman and Dubai expat Balwinder Sahani a staggering AED4.5 million.
The du number, which was made public information during an auction at the Grand Hyatt Dubai Convention Centre and again later by Sahani, was purchased on Saturday morning. And, while some would think that a number worth an arm and a leg would be well used, the RSG International owner has not and will probably never use it. “I can never use this number. I got it in my hands at 8.30pm today and till now, within just 2 hours, I’ve received 1,000 calls,” Sahani told Khaleej Times.
So, why did he buy? For charity. “I only wanted this number so it's the only one I bought. I never have limits when I want something, especially when it is for charity.”
In case the name Balwinder Sahani rings a bell, he’s the same guy who bought a license plate for AED33 million last year.
Yep, he really likes numbers. And, the D5 license plate that takes pride of place on his shiny Rolls-Royce isn’t the only one he has. In 2015, he spent AE25 million on an O9 license plate. That’s AED58 million on license plates!
The best bit? He has many, many more and considers himself a collector. “I have collected 10 number plates so far and I am looking forward to having more. It’s a passion,” reveals Sahani.
While, Sahani’s AED33 million license plate purchase maybe considered extreme, it’s not the most expensive one in the region. Nope, that belongs to local businessman Saeed Al Khouri who paid AED52.2 million for the number 1 license plate in Abu Dhabi in 2008. Yep, buying expensive license plates is most definitely a thing in the UAE.
