Work to start soon on Dubai's $1.1 billion mega-mall
Dubai loves a mall, and it’s about to get another one. News that Nakheel has awarded the construction contract of Deira Mall to United Engineering Construction LLC means that building work will start soon. The project is expected to start in Q3 of this year, with completion in 2020.
The total investment on this project is AED6.1 billion, which gives you an idea of the scale. It will be located on a four million sqft site, and once complete it will be Dubai’s biggest shopping, dining and entertainment destination in terms of retail space.
The mall will be located in the heart of Deira Islands, Nakheel’s new 15.3 sq km waterfront city that is part of Dubai’s 2021 vision. The area will be made up of four islands that will act as a leisure hub, transforming ‘old Dubai’ into a world-class visitor destination.
The total build area will be 10.3 million sqft, featuring a car park with 8,400 spaces and a mall with over 1,000 shops, cafes, restaurants and entertainment outlets. It will also have a retractable roof so that you can shop in the open-air during Dubai’s ‘winter’ months.
And that’s not all Nakheel has planned. There will also be Deira Islands Night Souk, which will be the world’s largest night market with a staggering 5,300 shops and almost 100 quayside cafes and restaurants. Construction for this project is already underway, and it’s on schedule to open in 2018.
Once complete, Deira Islands will be a new hub for entertainment in Dubai. As well as adding more shops to the city, it will add 40km (including 21km of beachfront) to Dubai’s coastline. As well as having hotels and serviced apartments, there will be waterside homes and two beachfront resorts courtesy of Spain’s RIU Hotels & Resorts and Thailand’s Centara Hotels and Resorts.
