Things your phone is useful for: checking up on old school friends, looking at memes, ordering food... how about getting through airport security? Pretty soon you’ll be able to use your smartphone as a passport at Dubai International Airport.

The Emirates Smart Wallet will allow you to save personal information such as your Emirates ID, passport and e-gate card so that you can pass through the airport quickly.

The innovation, that is said to be the first of its kind in the world, was launched yesterday by Dubai's deputy Chief of Police and Public Security Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim and the head of Dubai’s Naturalisation and Residency Department Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri.

Besides being convenient and time-saving to travellers, local news agency WAM reports that it also aims to keep travel clearing procedures to a minimum.

The smart system comes just weeks after the Dubai International Airport launched its “Together” initiative which aims to enrich passenger experience at the city’s main airport.

To do so, it has secured the help of its partners: Dubai Customs, Dubai General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), Dubai Police, and Dubai Airports.

Together they aim to create innovative and practical solutions to any problems currently faced in the airport based on “6s” – speed, smart, safety, security, saving and service.

Some of the changes that all passengers can look forward to when flying out of DXB international could include simpler check-in processes as well as baggage drop-off and tracking services.

Speaking on the news, Emirates’ Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Adel Al Redha said: “Last year, over 57 million passengers flew on Emirates, to Dubai or through Dubai, and that number continues to grow. To us, the hub experience and sustaining our growth is very important.”

He added: “Making use of technology and bringing new initiatives to life is key to building our future and staying ahead of competition. By working together we have a great opportunity to fast-track these initiatives and overcome challenges to improve the Emirates customer journey at our Dubai hub.”
