Following news that upgrades are planned for Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport, the first phase of projects has been revealed by Emirates Airline. The “Together” initiative will streamline the departures experience by using the latest technologies.

Biometric technology and automated border control gates are the first two projects that will be started immediately, with completion is expected in 12 to 18 months.

There will be a facial recognition solution in the UAE Wallet so that travellers can store their biometric data. There will be multiple ways of doing this, including taking a selfie on your mobile phone or using biometric registration kiosks placed at check-in areas and Emirates Lounges. This will allow people to use biometric data in Terminal 3, and throughout the rest of DXB Airport later down the line.

One Gate is the second project announced by Emirates. This will see smart immigration gates in Terminal 3 departures, in place of e-gates and immigration counters. This means that travelers will be able to go through border control using their biometrics and removes the need for a security officer to manually check passports and boarding passes.

Major General Mohammed Ahmed Almarri, Dubai General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDFRA) said: “In line with the government’s vision to be a world leader in providing public services, we have been evaluating the use of biometrics to enhance traveller flow through immigration.

“We are pleased to roll-out these new initiatives at Terminal 3 Departures in collaboration with Emirates and our airport stakeholders. We believe this will make our operations more efficient, free up our valuable manpower to focus on other responsibilities, and ultimately improve traveller experience.”

Adel Al Redha, Emirates Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer said that they will be introducing “more enhancements in the coming months.”

Finally your selfies will actually be useful.
