PICTURES: Dubai firefighter rescues cat from Torch Tower fire

A fire broke out in Dubai marina’s Torch Tower in the early hours of Friday morning, with firefighters from Dubai Civil Defence managing to control the blaze within hours. Thankfully, everybody in the 87-storey tower managed to get out, and there have been no casualties or injuries reported.

Following the fire, Dubai Media Office tweeted a picture of a member of the UAE’s Civil Defence holding a cat while sitting outside the tower. The caption reads: “#Dubai Civil Defence rescued pets from Torch Tower last night and reunited them with their owners.”

Another photo shows Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, with a cat that was found in the tower. The picture is captioned: “Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police returns a rescued pet from the Torch Tower to its owner.”

Firefighters and first respondents have been praised for their quick work – there were people at the scene within minutes, including the Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police Major General Abdullah Al Marri and Major General Rashid Al Matrooshi, Director General of Dubai Civil Defence.

The blaze was put out within two hours, and the cooling process began on Friday morning. All roads surrounding and leading to the building re-opened later that day.
