We all know that the UAE is extremely safe – especially expats who have moved here from large cosmopolitan cities around the world. In fact, Dubai was the only city to score 100 percent on a YouTube ‘honesty test’ where a man dropped his wallet in front of passersby.

But would you be surprised to learn that the UAE is actually home to the safest city in the world? According to a report by Numbeo, the coveted title goes to Abu Dhabi. The capital scored just 13.54 on the crime index over the last six months, and received the highest score on the safety index with 86.46.

Index respondents scored Abu Dhabi 94 percent overall for a general feeling of safety.

HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Director General, TCA Abu Dhabi, said: “Abu Dhabi has a solid reputation for safety with a virtually crime-free society. It is a priority when choosing a city to visit or live in and provides peace of mind knowing that you can feel safe anywhere you go in Abu Dhabi. The result of this index supports Abu Dhabi’s position as the leading city in the world to live, work and do business in, and highlights an aspect of life in Abu Dhabi that is a matter of great pride to all residents.”

Dubai came in at number 12, with a crime index of 19.52 (which is considered ‘very low’) and a safety index of 80.48.

To give you a better idea of what these numbers mean, here’s a breakdown of the crime index.

Crime Index:
Under 20 – very low
20-40 – low
40-60 – moderate
Above 80 – very high

The safety index is the opposite – high on the safety index is considered very safe.

Numbeo sources the statistics from survey participants who visit the site. You can check out the full list of cities here.
