Dubai’s Business Bay has been named one of the coolest neighbourhoods on Earth

Have a think about some cool places to live – where pops into your mind first? Hipster hangouts like Shoreditch in London or Williamsburg in Brooklyn, probably. Arty places like that. But maybe we’re all over places that are full of struggling thespians and independent cafes… According to travel guide the Lonely Planet, Dubai’s Business Bay is one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world.

In. The. World.

The district came in at number five on the list, behind Vesterbro in Copenhagen and The Triangle in Lisbon. Its proximity to the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Canal, as well as its handy central location, helped it bump up the ranks. According to Lara Brunt, an Australian travel journalist based in Dubai, “[…] the area is reinventing itself as a waterfront leisure destination.”

We can’t argue with that. Business Bay has certainly upped its ‘cool’ factor in the past few years, and with plenty more planned for Dubai Canal, it’s only going to get better.

Borgo San Frediano in Florence came out on top, followed by Seongsu-dong in Seoul.

Here’s the top 10

1.       Borgo San Frediano, Florence

2.       Seongsu-dong, Seoul

3.       The Triangle, Lisbon

4.       Vesterbro, Copenhagen

5.       Business Bay, Dubai

6.       Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur

7.       Sunset Park, New York City

8.       Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro

9.       Frelard, Seattle

10.   Tooting, London

Yes that’s right – Tooting made the top ten thanks to becoming “uber-cool” while retaining its “gritty charm”.

We have to say, it’s refreshing to see a top 10 that doesn’t just list off the same ‘hip’ destinations. After all, once anything becomes too popular, it’s just not cool anymore.
