7 awesome things to do in Dubai this week

Mozart Opera season
It was this time last year that Dubai Opera opened its doors for the first time and treated us to two of the best known and most beloved operas: Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers. It is fitting that the new season brings more first-rate opera as three of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most popular works take place in the space of ten days. There are two productions each of The Marriage of Figaro (September 7 and 14), Così Fan Tutte (September 8 and 15) and, finally, the darkly comic Don Giovanni (September 9 and 16). The operas have been specially commissioned by Dubai Opera and will be performed and produced by Teatro di San Carlo in Naples – and if you want to sample all three, you can do so for the price of just two in a special Opera Season Pass. Something to really sing about.

Hopfest 2017
The annual party at the Irish Village, a kind of early Oktoberfest, takes place this weekend in a big, purpose-built (and fully air-conditioned) tent in the backyard of the Irish Village. It is a pretty standard celebration of brewed beverages and live music, with the likes of Dubai favourites The Maplejacks, the lively Roadie and, for rockier tastes, Fixer. DJ Marky Mark then takes over to keep the party going into the small hours. It’s based on a voucher system, with discounts to be had if you arrive early. There’s free food on Saturday, September 9, from 12pm to 2pm too.

IT
IT, the seminal 1986 Stephen King novel, has been greeted with a combination of fevered excitement and no little trepidation. This is in many ways the archetypal Stephen King work, where childhood friendships in a New England idyll are interrupted by a creature whose form adapts to each child’s deepest fears. Anyone afraid of clowns, should steer clear of this one.
In cinemas from September 7
