Dubai Metro has now had over one BILLION passengers
Dubai Metro, the joyous autonomous transport system responsible for connecting us to all corners of the city and for teaching us how to say “the doors are closing" in Arabic, celebrated its eighth birthday with a special announcement yesterday, Saturday, September 9.
During an official ceremony, His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) stated that in just eight years, the Dubai Metro has transported over one billion passengers – that’s just short of 350,000 metro users a day.
According to a break down of the figures, the metro’s Red Line has transported over 689 million commuters since September 9, 2009. While the Green line, which opened on September 9, 2011, has served some 339 million people.
Al Tayer also used the event to address some of the metro’s many achievements.
Spanning across 75km, the Dubai Metro is the longest driverless metro line across the world. At 25,000sqm, Union was named the largest underground station in the world, while Burjuman was named one of the most “gorgeous stations in the world.”
With regards to the busiest stations, Al Tayer revealed that with over 47.8 passengers using the stop, Union is the busiest station on the Red Line. Al Faheedi was named the busiest station on the Green Line with over 37 million commuters using the stop in the past eight years.
Speaking on the news, Al Tayer said: “The Metro has started to bring back several benefits to the community such as the psychological and physical relief associated with the smooth mobility and reduced expenditure on car fuel and maintenance.”
He added: “The RTA is moving ahead with its ambitious plan to revamp mass transit systems and raise the share of public transport in the people’s mobility to as much as 30 percent by 2030. This rate reached 16 percent in 2016, and it will rise to 24 percent if we add taxis.
“Moreover, there is a remarkable evolution in the culture of the community and its perception of public transport means.”
