REPORT: Tourists spend more money in Dubai than anywhere else in the world

Mastercard has just named Dubai as being the place where tourists most like to spend their money and, honestly, we aren’t even a little bit surprised.

The city is home to a number of iconic landmarks such as the Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa with many more to come namely, the Dubai Frame. It also features a number of world-renowned experiences like Ski Dubai, IMG Worlds of Adventure and Wild Wadi. That’s just the activities, Dubai’s dining scene is a whole other ball game. Top chefs like Gordon Ramsay, Jason Atherton and more have all set-up shop in the city while, alluded hotel chains like Mövenpick, Sheraton and the Radisson can be found at every corner of the city. Guests looking to do some shopping can do so at one of Dubai’s many malls which include the Mall of the Emirates and the largest shopping centre in the world, The Dubai Mall.

Back to the report, according to Mastercard’s annual Destination Cities Index, tourists spent over AED105 billion (US$28.5 billion) in Dubai in 2016 alone. The impressive figure beat out the likes of New York City and London, where tourists spent AED62.5 billion (US$17.02 billion) and AED59.1 billion (US$16.09 billion), respectively.

Aside from spending, the index found that Bangkok was the world’s most visited tourist destination in 2016. According to the report, the Thai capital attracted over 19.41 million visitors last year which is more than London (19.06 million) and Paris (14.87 million). Dubai placed fourth on the list.

The news comes shortly after World Report and US News named Dubai the 10th best tourist destination in the world.

According to the report, Dubai claimed its prestigious spot due to its “stunning views of the Arabian Gulf, heart-pumping activities and historic landmarks.”

Aside from nabbing a coveted spot in the top 10, Dubai was named the number one place to visit in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
