Dogs are great aren’t they? Not only are they cute and cuddly, they also keep their humans safe. Bring us a dog, we’d like to pet it and tell it just how good it is….

Anyway, back on topic. Dubai Police has unveiled the city’s very first “Smart Dog”.

Although it’s not soft or fluffy, it has the ability to recognise speech, bark, sit and stand. It is also equipped with a 360 degree camera which means that it can send real-time images to its “owner” or the Dubai Police.

The Smart Dog is also a bit on the heavy side. It weighs 35kgs and much like the loving beings it’s based off, can alert its owner of trespassers and walk on four legs.

Smart Dog

According to officials, Smart Dogs will be placed outside of homes and various embassies across the city.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Chief Executive Officer of Innovation Kingdom – the company behind the initiative – Abdulsalam al-Hammadi announced that an updated Smart Dog model is already on the way.

Potential updates could include the ability to detect illegal substances and run.

The Smart Dog, who we’re calling Sam – looks a bit like a Sam, will join Dubai Police impressive fleet that includes the likes of Robocop and an android customs inspector.

If you haven’t heard of Robocop (not the film, we repeat not the film) or the android inspector, here’s what you need to know…

Robocop stands at a height of 170cm and weighs 100kg. It has the ability to detect emotions and hand gestures from a distance of 1.5 meters as well as map the insides of a building and navigate its path automatically via its self-control and drive feature. You can spot the happy looking device at The Dubai Mall.

The android customs inspector can be found at various airports across the city. The impressive device has the ability to detect body language, thermal heat as well as carry out facial recognition and tracking luggage.
