Dubai Police is all set to welcome a fleet of autonomous vehicles.

According to an agreement signed by the city’s police force and Acacus Technologies, we will be seeing a number of driverless patrol cars take to our streets by 2020.

The fleet is expected to be rolled out in stages, with the driverless vehicles set to be in full operation by 2020.

Speaking on the news, Rashid Ahmed Bin Rasheed, chairman of the board of Acacus Group told local newspaper Gulf News that: “We are proud to contribute in making Dubai the global hub of technological innovation.”

Dubai Police are the latest to add the autonomous means of travel to their portfolio that already includes the world’s fastest patrol car (Bugatti Veyron) as well as a number of Aston Martins and Lamborghinis.

Last September, Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority added a number of Tesla S and X Sedan models to its fleet.

The Tesla Sedan X has been described as the safest, fastest and most capable sport utility vehicle on the road. It can go from a speed of 0kph to 100kph in just 3.1 seconds and can seat seven. It also has the largest all-glass panoramic windshield in production. Not bad considering that one car of this model costs a cool AED344,000.

The Tesla S can accelerate from 0kph to 100kph in just 2.7 seconds. When fully charged, it can travel a range of 632km and has a 17 inch touch screen.

The city is also working on adding a number of driverless shuttle busses throughout the city.

One of the key locations include The Dubai Mall.

Dubai is also looking to launch a series of autonomous flying taxis that will transport passengers to and from various pods that will be set up throughout the city.

And according to recent reports, we could see them taking to our skies sooner rather than later.
