We’ve all been there – you’re no longer mates with someone but are afraid of escalating drama by unfollowing them on Instagram yet you really, really, don’t want to see them or their cat or their #foodgoals snaps.

So, what do you do? Do you bite the bullet and end things officially by unfollowing them or do you do what most do and continue to cringe at the sight of them and their #squad?

Well, thanks to Instagram’s latest feature, you can do neither and live a life of relative peace in knowing that you will never have to see Sally and her daily #livingmybestlive shots ever again.

The feature at hand is Instagram’s brand new “mute” function.

The feature allows you to mute posts from those who you would no longer like to see on your timeline while still following them.

Here’s how to activate the feature:

  • Select a post that you would no longer like to see
  • Click on the three dots on the top right corner
  • Select “Mute Posts”
  • Confirm that you want to mute this account's posts by tapping “Mute”. You will no longer see the posts on your feed

Should you suddenly decide that you want to see Sally and her annoying quotes, you can. All you have to do is go to her profile and tap “unmute posts”. You can also do it the long way by going on to her profile, clicking on the three dots and then clicking “unmute posts” from the menu.
