Top boys' nights out in Dubai

How to make the most of your next bout of 'man time'
Luke Wilson03 Mar 2019 AT 04:34 PM

We’re all for equal rights but when it comes to a night on the tiles (especially a cheap one), the balance seems to be very much tilted towards the other half.

Until a few years ago, the very concept of a gentleman’s night (akin to the one you ladies enjoy, almost daily) was just a pipedream. But if you build it, they will come.

Yes, we shouldn’t need a designated evening to get the fellas together (perhaps a designated driver – thank you, you magnificent men in your flying taxi machines) but it surely helps to know we can go out with the gang always knowing there’s a little part of the city devoted to it.

Let’s see if your ‘consciously coupled’ comrades are man enough to get a pink slip to join you on your escapades. If not, leave them at home doing their chores and sitting down for a night of ‘he said, she said’.

After all, they say it’s a man’s world but it would mean nothing (nothing) without a free drink or two.

The smart man would book a half-day off work and get the party started early. Hit your deadlines, hit your targets and hit one of these great places to set the tone for a night of consummately cracking capers.

Go-Karting at Dubai Autodrome
Leave the keys to your Porsche at home (or at least the keyring that covers up the fact you actually drive a saloon) and hit the tracks at Dubai Autodrome’s Kartdrome. They’ll provide all the gear – racing suits, helmets, balaclavas, gloves and the like – so all you need to do is turn up, rev up and make sure you keep your eyes on the prize. With both indoor and outdoor circuits, even your fair-weather friends should make it to the first lap of this night out, especially as prices start at just AED105.

Paintballing at Pursuit Games

Nothing quite says ‘I love you, man’ better than splatting your best buddies in the nether regions with a solid sphere that will break on impact, leaving you looking like a Jackson Pollock creation at his lowest point. With a wide range of killing zones and scenarios it’ll be almost impossible to find a foxhole in which you can lay low for a while during the crossfire. You wouldn’t want to do that, anyway as taking one for the team is far nobler than sitting it out waiting for the search party.

Strike it lucky at Wavehouse
Relive those care-free days when as a young lad you’d love nothing more than getting some ill-fitting, dubiously sprayed shoes on and knocking down some pins at your local alley. Your technique might never have improved over the years but not firing down gutter ball after inglorious gutter ball as you did when you were eight really feels like some sort of a victory. Don’t forget to embarrass your mates by asking them if they need some inflatable assistance if their aim is still awry come the final frame. Wavehouse’s alley is licensed, too, and that’s a real rarity in the city.

Take your anger out at The Smash Room
Growing up, we weren’t quite sure why our musical heroes had such an affinity for trashing hotel rooms and throwing TVs out of their windows. But that was until we entered the angst-ridding that is The Smash Room for the first time. Anything goes here, and you can live out your rock ’n’ roll dreams by smashing the Guns N’ Roses out of various glass apparati before taking a sledgehammer to said Toshiba set (other brands are available) without having your A&R guy settle the bill before check-out.

Once you’ve got those juices flowing following a few hours of foolhardy frolics, it’s time to move on to the main event. You don’t need a fancy suit, monocle or to be able to recite examples of second declension neuter nouns in Latin to be part of these gentlemen’s clubs, just be yourselves and take advantage of these top deals…

Asia de Cuba
The male fraternity among us will no doubt have felt a little left out at Asia de Cuba’s predecessor, China Grill, as it seemed girls just wanted to have fun, without us. But this Chino-Latino hotspot is more than making amends with its Equal nights on a Tuesday. Fellas can get free grape-based and mixed drinks for a full two hours (from 7pm-9pm). Try some of the fine fare on offer, as it’s half price, too.

Estrellas Rooftop Lounge
It’s rare to have a lads’ night offering on a Friday but we’re hoping Estrellas has hit upon something with this sweet deal. The chance to hang out with your pals (having snubbed the obvious allure of a brunch) mid-weekend has never been so alluring, with buckets of hops from AED120 and five shorts for AED100, plus live belly dancing that’ll make the other half feel suitably jealous.

Perry & Blackwelder’s Original Smokehouse

Giving an entirely different meaning to the term, Wingman Wednesday at this Southern-style bar and eatery will let you and the crew chomp through all-you-can-eat chicken wings from noon to 2am for just AED99 and wash them all down with a pitcher of chilled hops for the same price. Technically you could fill your face for a full 14 hours while watching some Champions League action (if you can keep the meat sweats from rolling into your eyes).

Another Souk Madinat Jumeirah venue willing to welcome lads with open arms is this Alpine-themed restaurant. Its Gent’s Drunch kicks off at 9pm on a Tuesday night and gives you unlimited drinks for a full two hours for the knock-down price of AED199. If you’re not a fan of the old rouge, the deal includes hops, too. Ordering in fluent French might win kudos from your pals but will most likely confuse the staff so leave your GCSE vocab book chez vous.

The Hideout
Should Dubai Marina be the venue for your gent’s get-together, The Hideout should be your hangout. Not only does it have a fine array of videogames for you to show off your Sonic skills and your Super Mario moves but head here on a Saturday and/or Sunday and you can watch all the biggest sport while being treated to a buy one, get one free deal on all house beverages from 3pm until midnight. A burger and a pint is a mere 600 Sonic rings (or AED60, to you and I).

Notorious for its Friday fiesta, Warehouse also puts on a smashing Saturday shindig, especially for the fervent footie fans among us. Grab a front-row seat in the hops garden and cheer on your boys as they either make or break your evening (you’re too grown up to cry about it, surely?). Do so while taking advantage of the generous F&B package that will get you a main course and unlimited house beverages for AED199 from 6pm-9pm.

Should you still have some stamina left and haven’t been asking to be subbed off with a ‘dodgy knee’ some hours ago, take your evening into extra time at these late-night bars and clubs. Your work’s in-house physio will be glad of a new client who’s put their back out on the dancefloor, we’re sure.

One of the most notoriously buzzing bars in Dubai, Barasti has more than two decades of entertaining party vibe-seeking guests under its rather broad belt. This place comes alive after dark, meaning you can dance yourself silly into the wee hours every night of the week. Wednesdays are all about the Tropicana BBQ Party when AED205 will get you unlimited house drinks and barbecue bites as you throw some shapes to ’80s and ’90s classics, in your flip-flops and oversized sunnies.

Barbary deli + cocktail club
Billing itself as a ‘risqué’ after hours with a ‘parlour feel’ (we haven’t the foggiest either), BARBARY will never turn away a group of burly men who are in no mood whatsoever to call it a night. Open until 2am on weekdays and 3am at weekends, this Barsha Heights mixed drinks bar/retro club/delicatessen has an impressive line-up of both resident and globally renowned DJs hitting the decks every night. Just don’t pester them with repeated requests for The Boys Are Back in Town.

Having just celebrated its fifth birthday with a guest set from superstar DJ Erick Morillo, Q43 has no plans to stop the party any time soon (and neither should you). Kicking out time at this hugely popular Media City hotspot isn’t until 3am so that’ll give you plenty of time to put your hands in the air and throw them around like you just don’t care. There’s free pool and Monday’s Kill The Bill night is all about the extended happy hour (5pm-2am) when BOGOF is a term of endearment.

Those of you who haven’t succumbed to the vagaries of Veganuary could concede that eating a whole side of beef in one sitting isn’t good for the environment. Or you could just saddle up for some meaty marvels that’ll prevent those morning-after-the-night-before hunger pangs.

Atlantis’ signature steakhouse has won many an award over the years. Take the whole (rat)pack down with you on a Saturday for Sinatra Night when the sounds of Ol’ Blue Eyes are faithfully recreated by the live singer as you munch your way through a hearty three-course menu for AED350. Mondays are all about that jazz, with a similar set menu (this time for AED250) and smooth stylings.

Maybe your posse is a little more refined than your run-of-the-mill lads on tour going out, out. In that case STK wants you to know you can bring a fitting finale to your soirée with some sophisticated culinary offerings. Dig into a tasty tenderloin steak, accompanied by your choice of sauce, a portion of STK’s signature fries and a glass of house grape every Saturday, Sunday and Monday at STK JBR and STK Downtown for AED169. Swap the grape for a bottle of hops, we won’t judge.

The Blacksmith Smokehouse
This all-American smokehouse wants you to get your hooks into its all-new Thursday evening brunch. From 7pm to 11pm the all-inclusive, four-hour package of meat-laden platters of smoked brisket, turkey and lamb ribs with sides of sweet potato mash and mac ’n’ cheese comes with free-flowing Southern mixed drinks, hops and house shorts for AED350 a head. Bang on!
