Base jump tower proposed for Dubai

Being the land of all things tall, it’s not much of a surprise that The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat have proposed a new 325-metre tower for Dubai. What may surprise you, however, is that this isn’t just another building – it’s a base jump tower.

If the project goes ahead, the impressive design for the structure, which would sit on the beachfront, will have a range of activities at different levels including base jumping, abseiling and climbing. The bottom of the building will have slightly less extreme fun, with children’s climbing walls and activities. And as the levels go up, it gets more terrifying.

Towards the middle of the tower there are plans for adrenaline-filled abseiling and climbing walls, as well as “vertical cliff camping” (if you’re brave enough to actually sleep suspended above the ground). But it’s the top of the tower that makes us feel a strange combination between excited and queasy – ice-pick climbs and base jumps.

10 Design is the lead design architect of the project, which would feature an external hexagram skin, according to a report by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, which quotes Archello magazine. Apparently this skin “flares out at both the base and the top of the tower to provide not only structural stability, but also to house a series of extreme sports activities.”

Perhaps the most exciting quote for climbing enthusiasts, is the reference to one of the world’s most famous mountains. “Conceptually, the tower’s functions emulate the ascent to Mount Everest, with multiple ‘base camps’,” the report reads.

As well as a base jump platform, the three peaks of the tower are designed to have an area for wire-assisted freefall.

Would you be brave enough to make the jump?
