Exhibition – Observing the Ritual
This collaborative photography exhibition at Gulf Photo Plus in Al Quoz seeks to explore the spaces in which the rituals fundamental to Muslim culture occur. From communal prayers held in a secret mosque in Italy to the breaking of the fast in a family home during Ramadan, the exhibition’s participating photographers shed light on some of the most intimate moments of life for practising Muslims. The exhibition has three distinct elements, each from the three photographers whose work is on display: Italy’s Nicoló Degiorgis, British-Lebanese Natalie Naccache and, from the UAE, Ammar Al Attar. In addition to the exhibition, there will be a series of workshops in the build-up: focusing on elements such as self-publishing for photographers (May 14), a review of Nicoló Degiorgis’ work and a chat with Ammar Al Attar both May 15).
When: From May 14

Cinema – The Trust (18)
Nicholas Cage’s latest outing, though, might be considered a return to form – or at least a reminder of how interesting an actor he used to be. In The Trust, Cage plays a cynical, detached forensic cop in Las Vegas who has long-since stopped caring about solving crimes. “I despise my job” is an early, scene-setting line of dialogue. His younger, although no-less disillusioned sidekick, played by Elijah Wood, spots the chance for a big fish when he investigates the bail money raised by a suspected drug dealer and hatches a plot to track its source.
In cinemas from May 12
