There has been a lot of talk about the Hyperloop coming to the UAE. And now the grand idea seems to be more of a reality. Yesterday, Dubai Media Office announced a contest for Hyperloop designs for a link project between Dubai and Fujairah, meaning that you may soon be able to travel between the two emirates in less than 10 minutes.

Dubai Future Foundation will host the ‘Build Earth Live’ contest this September. It will be a 48-hour competition with teams from various international scientific enterprises.

If you’re not too sure what the Hyperloop is, here’s a bit of a recap. It’s basically a vacuum tunnel that will propel commuters between cities at 1,220 kilometres per hour. The technology was drawn up by Elon Musk, a rocket scientist and the entrepreneur behind SpaceX – an aerospace manufacturing company. It was initially proposed by Hyperloop companies as a way of connecting Dubai and Abu Dhabi, though there has been no confirmation on whether this will go ahead.

There’s been a lot of talk surrounding futuristic transportation in the UAE, including levitating pods and driverless taxis, and this latest announcement shows that the country is looking to work with the most innovative commuter networks around the world.

HE Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has said that the Dubai Autonomous Transportation Strategy aims to ensure that 25 percent of Dubai’s commuting trips are autonomous. It’s hoped that this will place Dubai at the forefront of next generation transport technology.

Commenting on the event, His Excellency Mohammed Al Gergawi, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Managing Director of Dubai Future Foundation, said: “Dubai is hosting this global event as part of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make the UAE and Dubai a global platform for innovative minds to come together to create futuristic solutions on issues of relevance to humanity. This contest is a great opportunity to explore innovation ideas in the smart transportation sector.”
