The UAE just won a medal at the Olympics!
Sergiu Toma scooped a bronze medal for the UAE at Rio 2016! The 29-year-old judo star beat Italian Matteo Marconcini in the 81kg match on Tuesday evening.
In earlier rounds he defeated Brazil’s Victor Penalber, Germany’s Sven Maresch and reigning world champion Japan’s Takanori Nagase.
This is the UAE’s second-ever Olympic medal, making it a particularly proud moment for Toma. It's not the first time that the Moldovan-born Emirati has competed in the Olympics – he participated in London and Beijing, but was knocked out in earlier rounds.
"I’m very proud to represent the UAE and win the medal for them," Toma told The National. "I want to thank all the people in Moldova and the Emirates for helping me with my career. I dedicate this to them and to my mentor."
When asked if he would rather win a medal for the UAE or Moldova he said that would definitely prefer a win for the UAE.
