The RTA is re-opening U-turns in Dubai Marina
In news that will delight Dubai Marina residents, The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that it will be re-opening the left and U-turns along the tram line.
According to United Arab Emirates news agency, WAM, the left and U-turns of Al Sufouh-Al Gharbi Streets along the track of Dubai Tram will re-open in early September. This follows the re-opening of turns along the tram line in JBR, which proved successful.
The closure of these turns was part of a strategic Tram/Roads Safety Strategy to achieve zero accidents and give drivers a chance to get used to the tram. It means that when these turns re-open, motorists should be clued up on how it operates. The temporary closure has also given the RTA the chance to implement the appropriate safety measures.
“The plan encompasses organisational procedures encapsulated in 15 strategic recommendations integrated in a five-year plan covering programs, procedures and initiatives undertaken in collaboration with strategic partners with the aim of achieving zero accidents level in the operation of the Dubai Tram by 2020,” said Engineer Maitha bin Adai, CEO of RTA’s Traffic & Roads Agency.
The Tram/Roads Safety Strategy covers areas such as light signals, awareness campaigns, traffic enforcement measures and coordination of technical procedures.
There are measures in place to ensure that the turns are opened safely while maintaining traffic movement. He added: "We have introduced a feature in the traffic light signaling system whereby all light signals will turn red once the tram approaches the junction. We have installed surveillance cameras to monitor vehicles jumping the red signals in coordination with the General Department of Traffic at the Dubai Police. We have also launched awareness campaigns in this regard and a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Dubai Police to ensure the safe use of these turns.
