Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Name: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Release date: December 2015
Dramatis Personae: They got the band back together! Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are reunited along with newcomers John Boyega and Daisy Ridley. Interesting stat: Mark Hammill is now the same age as Alec Guinness when he first portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi in the first Star Wars.
So, where are we? This is the seventh film and also the seventh in the sequence – which means we don’t keep having to explain what we mean by the “third one”. We join the crew 30 years after the end of The Return of the Jedi. That’s about all that Disney are telling us.
Oh yeah, Disney…. To say their acquisition of LucasFilms and all the Star Wars rights has been controversial is an understatement. Apparently George Lucas’ ideas for this trilogy have been ditched in favour of a new script by director JJ Abrams, who does at least know his way around a sci-fi movie having graduated from Star Trek.
What changes can we expect? Get ready to geek out: Disney recently unveiled the new (and dramatically improved) Stormtroopers. Though polished and more formidable-looking than ever, their role remains a mystery. A new trailer, released April 16, also unveils three-blade lightsabers, and *deep breaths, everyone* Princess Leia with a sabre!
And of course, they filmed here in the UAE. Will we recognise it? Depends how well you know your sand. The original location for Tatooine, in Tunisia, was deemed no longer safe to film in so they opted for the Empty Quarter in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi. Head for Liwa and see if you spot a stray landspeeder.
December can’t come fast enough. Correction: If the rumours are true, December 2015, 2016 and 2017 can’t come quick enough. Expect a Star Wars movie every Christmas for the next three years.
In a nutshell: It is your… destiny.
