Royal treatment at One&Only Royal Mirage

Through the elegant entrance courtyard of One&Only Royal Mirage, lies the Residence & Spa. Architecturally impressive and reminiscent of great buildings in the Middle East (think: towering domes, carved arches and intricate tiling) this spa is visually distinctive.

For those who are not familiar with this term, a hammam is a steam room, similar to a Turkish bath, where cleansing is habitually carried out each week. Therapists rinse your body with scoops of lukewarm water from an Arabic washbasin, as you sit on heated slabs of marble. Afterwards your body is washed with traditional Moroccan black soap, made of olive oil and herbs, followed by a full-body exfoliation with your very own loofah (which you are invited to take away with you when you leave). The body scrub is vigorous, to say the least, removing layers of dead skin until your body is smooth and tender.

Next up is a traditional body wrap with eucalyptus-scented ‘Ghassoul’ or natural mineral clay from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. At the same time you receive a honey facial mask, with all-natural ingredients, to cover your face and neck. After a 15-minute ‘marinade’ guests are then washed clean once more with amber and musk shampoo and body gel from head-to-toe, followed by a relaxing massage with shea cocoa butter.

The pressure point head massage is a fitting end to the treatment, before being introduced to your own private relaxation room and hammam pool, where you can enjoy Arabic tea, dates or even a quick snooze.

The best part about the Royal Hammam Experience is – as corny as it sounds – its ability to transport you away from the world; through the spa’s visual interior, traditional treatments and private relaxation rooms.

We tried: The Royal Hammam Experience, 80 minutes

We like: The all-natural honey facial mask

We’d come back for: The Arabian touch
