Race to Dubai goes down to the wire

Companies might have to start considering giving their employees Sundays off in November.  Next week there’s the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, while today in Dubai is the final day’s play of the European Tour – which is gearing up to be the tightest of finishes.

Set up a meeting, book a half-day, entertain a client… whatever excuse you pull, it’s a very good idea to head to Jumeirah Golf Estates this afternoon. Basically, the Race To Dubai is now a two-horse race and they’re effectively neck and neck and in prime form coming into the last couple of furlongs.

After three days of golf, the situation going into the final day’s play is as follows:

– Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood are the only men who can win the 2017 European Tour order of merit.
– Rose needs to win the DP World Tour Championships today to guarantee his position at the top of the season-long rankings.
– Fleetwood simply needs to equal or beat Rose’s position to win it.
– Rose leads the field by a single stroke.
– Fleetwood is just two shots back.

What’s remarkable about the leaderboard is that Fleetwood looked well and truly out of contention yesterday but in the final 11 holes, he shot an incredible nine birdies to finish with a second consecutive 65 to put the title firmly in his sights.

Olympic champion Rose, meanwhile, is aiming for a third straight win on the European Tour, representing an incredible late surge up the rankings.
Today, then, is the very epitome of “all to play for”.
