International Woolmark Prize Sketches

For the first time, Dubai is the city of choice for the International Woolmark Prize’s regional finals. Taking centre stage for India, Pakistan and the Middle East, Vida Hotel Downtown will host the awards on Wednesday July 22, in what’s set to be an incredible showcase of local talent.

Each of the nominees, who represent a diverse range of styles in the region, have presented six sketches designed using Merino wool. Of this sketched capsule collection, one of the outfits will be made. As well as Lebanese designers including Bashar Assar and Mira Hayek, there are the regional finalists flying the flag for the UAE – Taller Marmo and Bleach in womenswear and Thamanyah in menswear.

The prize was first launched in 1953, and was made famous the following year by its winners Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent. These days, it’s thought of as an elite award for upcoming talent. Five other regional finals are being held in the likes of Sydney, Shanghai and London, ahead of the International Woolmark Prize finals in Florence (menswear) and New York (womenswear) next year. The overall winner will receive AED300,000 towards sourcing materials and marketing their new collection.

Nez Gebreel, CEO of Dubai Design and Fashion Council commented: “We are here to seize global opportunities to position Dubai as an international hub for design. There is a tremendous amount of creativity and positive energy in the region’s industry and partnering with the International Woolmark prize is a great opportunity for us to further support and mentor these upcoming designers to realize their potential and achieve their dreams.”
