Southpaw: The film, the hype & the workout



Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Billy Hope, a boxer who has recently lost his wife (played by Rachel McAdams, who is rumoured to be dating Gyllenhaal in real life). With his daughter in protective services, Billy turns to his trainer for help repairing the chaos around him.

What makes this film stand out from all the others? The director. As a huge boxing fan, Antoine Fuqua was keen to make sure that Southpaw wasn’t cheesy, and to achieve that it had to seem real. He told Gyllenhaal that he didn’t want him to play a boxer, he wanted him to become one.

Workout Regime
As you can tell from the above (and Gyllenhaal’s crazy muscles) the workout regime was intense. His trainer Terry Claybon outlined a daily routine of 2,000 sit ups, 100 pull-ups, 100 dips, 2 sets of 100 squats, an eight mile run, and boxing workouts including punching and sparring. Gyllenhaal took the whole thing very seriously, probably due to the Antoine Fuqua’s strict direction. By the time they started filming, his trainers said that he didn’t just look like a pro boxer, he moved like one too.
