The last week of the month sees a re-imagined revival of hit show Heroes, alongside a Memento-esque thriller that’s already got tongues wagging Stateside

Event: Primetime Emmy Awards
When: Monday 21st, 04:00
Live coverage of TV’s version of the Oscars. While some of the early categories are forgettable (will Antiques Roadshow win best Unstructured Reality Program?) the main categories are all albout the big series and a good recap of what was great on the small screen this year. Ideal if you’re in the market for some box set suggestions or just want to cheer on your favourites – VEEP and Silicon Valley deserve to do well tonight.

Series: Blindspot (season 1 episode 1)
When: Thursday 24th, 21:00
Screening just three days after the U.S. premiere, the hopes are high for this drama about a mysterious tattooed woman who turns up in Times Square, naked and with total amnesia. The FBI discovers that her tattoos relate to a criminal conspiracy that they head off to solve. High-concept dramas like this are usually great for the first series then start to lose their way, but this is the big new series for NBC and great things are expected of this show.

Modern Film: Foxcatcher
When: Saturday 26th, 21:00
Steve Carrel transforms himself incredibly to play millionaire John E. du Pont, in the true story of du Pont’s sponsorship of wrestlers as they train for the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Yes, it’s one of those films that is lauded for the performances rather than the story (it often feels slow) but the performances of Mark Ruffalo, Channing Tatum and especially Carrel are brilliant. The fact it’s a true story gives it weight and the slowness of the film actually adds to that creepy feeling that bad things are coming.

Series: Heroes Reborn (miniseries, episode 1)
When: Saturday 26th, 21:00
The much-loved show returns after five years for a 13-episode miniseries. The premise is the same  – ordinary people discover they have special abilities – and many of the original cast are returning, with Zachary Levi (previously in Chuck) as a new leading addition. More engaging than most of the superhero stories, either in film or on TV, this was always an enjoyable series and just like The X-Files (also back next year), a mini series is about the right amount for another hit of action, conspiracy fun.

Series: The Player (season 1 episode 1)
When: Saturday 26th, 23:00
Set in Las Vegas, Wesley Snipes is the pit boss at a casino where an organization of millionaires gamble on the ability of former military operative (known as The Player) to stop some major crimes from happening. Meanwhile, The Player is seeking revenge for the death of his wife. Again, it’s another high-concept series that is likely to end up feeling like an overlong straight to DVD film by season two, but these things – just like Vegas – are always loud, exciting fun at the start.
