Square, Park & Garden Grand Opening

It might sound like an urban redevelopment project, but there is plenty to celebrate when this trio of nightspots in JW Marriott Marquis is officially opened this weekend. Square nightclub, which first opened its doors on the hotel’s fifth floor in May, is being joined by Garden, a Peruvian restaurant and lounge, and Park, an outside terrace. The grand opening of all three takes place on Thursday October 8, and with DJ Mark Fanciulli headlining, it’s set to be a big one.

The concept is one which has been percolating its way into the Dubai hospitality scene in recent months: to create an entire night out in one location. Drinks, dinner and club in three separate environments without ever having to leave the same premises. Because no one should ever valet twice in the same evening, right?

The opening party will provide an up-close-and-personal look at two of the venues. Park will serve up a live show by Dubai-based electronic duo Arcade 82, comprised of Mark Pickup and Shyam, which will then be followed by Lebanese techno and deep house DJ KayTek. At the afterparty in Square, local DJ Somalie will be warming the decks for Mark Fanciulli, one of the fastest-rising names on the techno circuit.

Taken together, the three venues ought to help consolidate the JW Marriott marquis as one of the premium nightlife destinations in Dubai. They will join an already generous column of outlets that includes Velocity, itself home to an eclectic array of club nights, and fine-dining restaurants such as Positano, Rang Mahal, Tong Thai and Izakaya. Essentially, the hotel is a burger place away from needing its own Entertainer book.

Meet the DJ – Mark Fanciulli
On his style: “In my teens, I was really into playing breaks but I’ve evolved into more of the harder techno but still reaching both ends of the spectrum of deep house to industrial techno.”
On visiting new places: “I always try and make the most out of visiting new places, take in as much as I can of the local sounds. I love seeing new things.”

Launched back in May with a DJ set by Reboot, Square has become an immediate fixture on the clubbing map. The slick (although not particularly right-angled) space hosts local and international house and techno DJs every Tuesday and Thursday. It is perhaps most famous for its Shibuya night, which included the likes of Clive Henry, Bushwacka and, only a couple of weeks ago, Ian Pooley.

We’re not quite sure why Peruvian cuisine has become – pardon the pun – flavour of the month, but Garden will be serving up a contemporary take via sharing plates. The space is both vibrant and intimate, with soft lights, weathered wood tables and, as the name would suggest, an abundance of greenery. Highlights include Lomo Saltado (AED90), stir-fried beef with red vinegar criollo potato, and Beef Parrillero (AED175), a Wagyu beef served with Peruvian yakiniku sauce.

This is the new outside space that will be coming into full effect around about now. It has novel touches such as benches and even swings to help you unwind.
