Dubai Customs Seized 330 Tons and 200 Samples In Violation Of The CITES Convention In 3 Years

Aligning with the present theme of ‘Year of Sustainability’ Dubai customs has revealed that throughout the previous three years, it has taken hold of nearly 330 tons and over 200 samples of both species of flora and fauna species that breach the International Conventions on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The United Arab Emirates has been a part of these organizations since 1990.

Dubai Customs assists in preserving environmental sustainability

Dubai customs aids in the UAE’s goal of preserving environmental sustainability by combating illegal trafficking in hazardous materials and waste. The nation is all set to conduct the 28th edition of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, also known as COP28.

This conference will be held from the 30th of November to the 12th of December 2023. The conference sets its target on making progress and creating innovative opportunities for a world with a safe climate in addition to enhancing sustainable economic and social development.

The custom Inspection sector of Dubai Customs plays a major part in fighting attempts to smuggle prohibited substances. They organize wide public awareness campaigns on the significance of protecting endangered animals and plants.

They also conduct exhibitions, displaying confiscated items aligning with the Green Customs initiative declared by Dubai Customs during the earlier part of the year.  This Green Customs initiative is an exemplary model for collaborations on an International scale to stop the illegal trade in environmentally harmful substances.

The Customs Inspection Division of Dubai Customs is planning on elevating the efficiency of inspectors by giving them qualification and training classes on different types of smuggling techniques for enhancing international cooperation in regulating and implementing the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

CITES, also known as Washington Treaty is a multilateral agreement that aims at protecting endangered plants and animals from being an international trade commodity. This treaty came into effect on July 1st of 1975.

In addition to these efforts, a list has been released mentioning the endangered animal species to recognize and make use of them during the seizure operations. Dubai Customs has been continuously developing and employing the latest and advanced smart information technology to aid with the inspection procedures at the customs port in Dubai.

This comprises an advanced container inspection system and the ‘Risk engine’ system which was developed by the Department to effectively look out for the risk of commercial shipments.

A noteworthy achievement in combating the CITES breach was the interception of an attempt to smuggle 64 live falcons through the Hatta border crossing. This incident was a violation of the laws of the UAE, including the law regulating and monitoring the trade of endangered species of plants and animals, along with the veterinary quarantine law.

In violation of Federal Law No. 11 of 2002 on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the seized shipments lacked proper documentation and health certificates.
