Groove on the Grass
It’s barely conceivable that Röyksopp’s debut album, Melody AM, is now more than 15 years old. Launched just when discerning clubbers were craving more nuance, more subtlety and more, well, melody from their dance music, it was a sophisticated slab of lounge-ready, chilled-out song-structured electronica that immediately exploded – and helped consolidate a burgeoning synth-dance scene in Scandinavia.
Four further albums followed, plus a full-length collaboration with Swedish songstress Robyn, until they suddenly declared that there’d be no more. It’s only singles from now on. Only collaborations when they felt like it. Only music when they had something worth releasing. Last year’s upbeat pop smash “Never Ever” with another long-time collaborator Susanne Sundfor was a case in point. “We love it, but we don’t need 12 tracks like it,” Torbjorn Brundtland said of its out-of-nowhere appearance.
What our playlists have lost, though, our festivals have gained. Torbjorn and partner Svein Berge continue to unleash DJ sets, many of which are interlaced with tracks from their own catalogue such as “What Else Is There?” with another Swede Karin Dreijer (The Knife, Fever Ray), and “Poor Leno”, their collaboration with pre-hipster king and compatriot Erlend Oye.
Add in a few Twin Peaks references and spider’s web visual, it all seems perfect for a February with a hint of chill in the air. Smooth on the grass, maybe.

Sasha and Skream
Another big day by the sea is guaranteed with Sasha headlining the latest party at Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE. A mainstay on the house scene, he has been shaping a new chapter in his career with his Last Night On Earth imprint, which has championed producers such as James Teej, Ejeca, Ghosting Season and Max Cooper. He will be supported by Skream, the handle of UK dubstep artist and producer Oliver Dene Jones – perhaps best known for his mix of La Roux’s “In For the Kill”.
