Sigala to play Zero Gravity this weekend
If you want the antithesis of the just-add-water musical fame of reality TV, Bruce Fielder, aka Sigala, will provide it in spades. He was working in a glorified pawnbrokers called Cash Converters in his native Norfolk, UK, when he realised that he had to get out and pursue music full time. Already in a band, he moved to London, enrolled in a commercial music course and, meeting up with fellow students who were into MC-ing, started making them beats in his bedroom.
As he gradually honed his talent, he came to the attention of Tileyard Studios in East London and co-wrote singles for emerging popstars like Ella Eyre. That, though, is when his journey took a different path – and in many ways, actually began. “I was doing something that I knew I wanted to do but not in the way I wanted to do it,” he says. “It was crushing my creativity. I wanted to do something for myself.”
Back in his bedroom, he mixed up some Jackson Five multitracks to create the song “Easy Love”, which became a UK number one, and followed it up with “Sweet Lovin’”, an original composition. The offers of remixing and DJ-ing started flooding in. Sigala, a name taken from a distant Italian relative, was suddenly where
he’d always dreamed of being.
“My heart is in writing and making music,” he says. “I come from playing in bands and that’s where I feel more at home and it’s important to show that side of me. My live shows feature keyboards and drum pads, and maybe I’ll throw in some lasers, too.”
Dubai has already seen Sigala in action. He was on the same megabill as Oliver Heldens at Zero Gravity’s One Big Friday last April
and he’s back at the same venue this weekend, playing at the venue’s Friday night Aurora party. Expect lots of bouncing house and EDM mash-ups – perfect for the poolside.
