Everything that you need to know about Sensation Dubai

The world’s most-travelled electro-music party heads back to Dubai on November 10. Sensation has played out on every continent across 34 countries and 42 cities, and this Friday will head back to Meydan Racecourse with an impressive line-up of acts.

It’s billed as an event to “celebrate life”, and although quite how that will play out in a literal sense is largely ambiguous, we expect upbeat sets to help make you forget your worries and reach a euphoric state of mind. Or something like that.

As well as DJs wowing the crowds, there are firework displays, acrobat performances, creative light shows and a whole lot more. Guests are encouraged to wear white, too, which gives the event a unique feel of unity.

It’s also very popular. At the time of writing the cheapest tickets (AED340) are completely sold out, but if you’re feeling flush you can head to the other end of the scale and drop AED45,000 on a table in a prime position. You probably want to know who’s on the bill before committing to that expense though, right? Here’s the list:

Possibly the most instantly recognisable of the bunch – thanks to his head and neck being covered in white emulsion – the Dutch DJ is the resident opening act of the Sensation tour. The house DJ is something of an enigma, part of the shtick being that he never talks. What we do know is that he’s great at making the crowd dance to his beats.

The only double act on the bill, Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano are of Surinamese descent and hail from Amsterdam. Since 2009 the pair have been cooking up their progressive house and pumping out sets across Europe and beyond. With a wealth of singles under their belt, James and Marciano have all the tools to go big at Sensation.

Once one third of the electro-supergroup Swedish House Mafia – whose other members Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell are regular and high-profile visitors to Dubai – Steve Angello continues to make a name for himself as a solo act. The DJ is quite possibly the biggest act playing at Sensation and will undoubtedly dip back into his rich back catalogue of hit albums and singles on the night.

Another Netherlands native, Don Diablo has his fingers on all things house: electro, progressive, future, you name the sub-genre, he’s covered it. Ranked 11th in 2017’s top DJs by DJ Magazine, Diablo has gained prominence not only for his DJ-ing skills, but also production and vocalising on his own tracks.

At just 22, Avila is the youngest act on the bill, but he’s already built an enviable career of working with top artists such as the Black Eyed Peas, Fedde Le Grande and Tiësto. The Spanish house DJ is known for his beat drops and got into the industry thanks to his dad, who was a club owner.

Chances are you probably don’t recognise the name, but you will almost certainly have heard his 2015 tropical house remix of Robin S’s “Show Me Love”. The track was everywhere and is still the DJ’s main floor-filler. Feldt was once described by Billboard as a “modern house superstar”, so you know you’re in for a good time when he’s on the decks.

Possibly the most unique performer on the list, MC Gee is, as his name suggests, an MC, which means he provides the vocal flow to keep up the energy of the crowds. The British-born act has over 20 years’ experience on the EDM circuit and is known for his ability to set the anticipation levels to fever pitch. Think of him as the glue that holds the whole
of Sensation together.
