6 things to do in Dubai this week

It’s a week full of culture, with Middle Eastern art, Russian ballet and classic American music. Those who prefer their entertainment on a screen should check out Dubai Games Week, and if you head to the cinema to see The 33, make sure you pack plenty of tissues.

Galleries night at Al Serkal Avenue
Alserkal Avenue hosts its latest gathering to introduce the new art season in Dubai. It will collect the city’s creative forces to showcase both the key exhibitions of participating galleries and the themes for 2016 and beyond. This year’s programme has been designed to critically examine expanding concepts of community and belonging taking shape in this globalised city. A series of talks, films and workshops that interrogate these concepts have already been announced. Alserkal Avenue is home to 25 creative spaces, nine top contemporary galleries, and a private museum.

Cinema – The 33
In 2010, when an old Chilean mine collapsed trapping 33 miners inside – the world held its breath for 69 days, prayed for the safe return of all the men buried over 200 hundred stories underground. Starring Antonio Banderas, James Brolin and Gabriel Byrne, The 33 documents the incredible, life-affirming struggle of both the brave souls trapped in the mine’s depths, and the families who refused to give up on them – offering a coruscating look at what went on behind the headlines. For extra authenticity, the film was shot in Chile’s Atacama desert, only meters from where the whole event took place. Watch the trailer, we challenge you not to well-up… let alone the film.
