Classic cars and fine art meet Zebra Square Gallery
Located in the middle of Al Quoz’s creative scene, a revolutionary art space has opened its doors bringing a brand new gallery concept to the city. For the first time in the UAE, classic cars are exhibited alongside contemporary fine art. Zebra Square Gallery is the brainchild of husband and wife duo Klaus and Jillian Grogor whose two passions have came together under one warehouse-conversion gallery roof.
On entering Zebra Square you are immediately met with the masculine lines of the Cobra’s VS the feline Ford GT40; an extraordinary gallery floor of classic mechanical beasts surrounded by artworks by some of South Africa’s most iconic, leading artists.
Klaus designed the entire space of the gallery, with considerations for showcasing the classic cars, the fine art paintings, contemporary sculptures and a very unique Ardmore collection. Klaus has modernized the way in which art is displayed in Dubai by combining a trading car showroom and atelier with intermittent contemporary bronze sculptures by Lionel Smit and paintings by Beezey Bailey and Deborah Bell. The now rather conventional ‘white cube’ way of exhibiting art is challenged at Zebra Square.
Another equally unique element to the gallery’s design, which also hasn’t been seen in Dubai before, is a small room that is solely designated for the showcase of Zebra Square’s impressive collection of Ardmore Ceramics. The gallery’s Ardmore collection consists of 15 artists’ hand-painted, individualistic ceramic artworks from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Christie’s have proclaimed that Ardmore as the ‘modern day collectables ‘ with collections being presented in New York’s Museum of Art and Design and collectors including Queen Elizabeth II. Most recently, Hermes has modeled the Ardmore design on their 2016 scarves.
On speaking to Klaus about the unique concept of the gallery, he simply reasons that “classic cars are art”, and one has to agree. As they stand in the gallery space they ooze the aesthetic qualities that are similarly felt when admiring a painting. The elegance of artistry that goes into the making of the machines can be appreciated the same way one studies the brushwork and composition of an artwork.
Klaus has been trading in classic and exotic cars for over 25 years, whilst Jillian has always been involved closely in the arts as a collector and appreciator, as well as having built the Zebra Square brand. Zebra Square is an established brand in South Africa, that is widely known for its exclusive event management.
This is the latest gallery adds a welcome new edge to the electric mix of warehouse spaces in Al Quoz.
