The UAE is now eligible to take part in the Oscars

Movie fans rejoice! The UAE is now eligible to take part in the Oscars.

It seems like our beloved UAE is finally in the running to join the prestigious award ceremony that recognises leading actors, directors, producers and all things film.

The Dubai International Film Festival announced the news that the UAE is now be able to submit an entry to The Academy’s foreign language film competition for the 90th Academy Awards yesterday. This means that the UAE is now eligible to submit a feature-length film for consideration in this category.

Speaking on the honour, DIFF Chairman Abdulhamid Juma said: “On behalf of everyone involved in the industry here, we are delighted to now be in a position to submit UAE films for the Oscars, which is another step forward to placing UAE film and talent on the world cinematic map.

“It’s encouragement for all UAE filmmakers that our stories can go a long way in today’s world. The UAE film industry has come on leaps and bounds in the last 10 years and the future looks very promising with more compelling films being produced year on year and finding acclaim at festivals around the world and securing theatrical releases.”

Last year’s winner of DIFF’s Muhr Emirati, Ahmad Zain agrees. The Lisa director told Gulf News that he was optimistic about the impact that it would have on the productivity of the industry.

“It will absolutely help to improve cinema here and filmmakers will work even harder now that there’s the possibility of the Oscars accepting their films. There will be more and more movies that are worthy of nomination,” he said.

We’re super excited! Now all we need to do is wait and see which one the nation’s many films makes its way to Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre next March…
