8 things to do in Dubai this weekend

Unite with Tomorrowland
Even accounting for Dubai’s impressive history of mega clubland parties, Unite with Tomorrowland on Saturday, July 29 might just be staking a sizable claim to be the biggest of the lot. Taking place in a specially built dome inside Dubai Festival City’s Arena, it will be the Dubai hub for a unique, trans-world, interconnected eight-city party – all of which will be synced to the main event in the city of Boom in Belgium. The DJs and acts at Unite with Tomorrowland in Dubai will include Martin Solveig, Arcade 82, Tom Swoon and Franky Rizardo.
When: From 2pm, Saturday, July 29
Where: Dubai Festival City Arena

Ahmed El Bayed’s Take Off World Tour
Arabia’s first illusionist Ahmed El Bayed stops by Dubai with a show that combines stunts, urban legends and spectacular storytelling. The Saudi star (just check his Insta likes to see how big he is now) has been performing for 14 years and has been a staple on regional TV. To give you an idea, there are plenty of his street-trick videos going around on YouTube in which he stuns members of the general public with nothing more than a pack of cards – including an incredulous Sheikh on the Dubai Metro in 2011. He has, though, done more daring stunts, including driving down Skull Valley, Arizona completely blindfolded, and being dropped into icy seas at the North Pole – all of which means he has well and truly earned his title of “Middle East’s Pioneer illusionist”.
When: Thursday and Friday, July 27-28
Where: DUCTAC, Mall of the Emirates

Jinjer
Are there many fans of Ukrainian groove metal in Dubai? We’ll be in a better position to judge after Jinjer have passed through The Music Room. Formed in 2009, they have gone on to share a stage with the likes of Caliban, Evanescence and The Rasmus, although this will be their first time to the Middle East. They’ll be supported by local acts Svengali, Pull Box, Wulfram Dxb and Riot Fist.
When: Friday, July 28
Where: The Music Room, Mankhool
Price: AED120.

Hangry Hangers
We know, we know, not another food truck festival. Hangry Hangers – neat name – is much more than that though. It’s an entertainment destination. There’s live music, comedy and yes, some great food. The best bit? It’s free. That’s right, the Friday music night (8pm to 11pm) and the Saturday evening stand-up (7pm-10pm) shows are free. So, really, the least you can do is buy a burger and enjoy the show.
When: Friday and Saturday, July 28 – 29
Where: Hangry Hangers Warehouse 4, Al Qouz

Plus-Minus with Matthias Meyer
Matthias Meyer is the main draw for the last Plus-Minus party of the month. The DJ has carefully developed a groove-laden, textured and almost organic approach to house and techno music, shunning obvious floor-fillers in exchange for ever-evolving sets that build to a crescendo. As with all Plus-Minus parties, there is an AED275 food and drink package available, otherwise it’s AED100 on the door from 9pm.
When: Friday, July 28, 6pm-3am
